Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the right to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
